Hey guys how is everything going today? We hope that you are really getting stuck in with your studies. We have for you now a very exciting Kanji lesson, but not just any Kanji. We will be looking today at Kanji relating to rain.
We will be looking at amazing ways to remember these Kanji, looking closely at the forms and structures and giving you all the knowledge, you need to get confident with your rain related kanji.
Let’s get on our welly’s and jump on into today’s lesson.

The basics, let’s get started with rain and rainy season
The first kanji that we are going to want to look at is obviously the Kanji for rain. Most of the kanji that we learn from here we’ll be expanding on that.

If you look at this Kanji you can see 4 rain droplets within it. This looks like rain on a window and is a great way to remember the kanji.
Now we are going to look at the next kanji which is the kanji for rain season. This Kanji combines the 雨 kanji that we have just learnt with another kanji.
梅雨
つゆ / ばいう
tsuyu / baiu
Rainy Season
This is a really useful kanji to remember as in Japan from late March to early April is peak season throughout much of the country.
Let’s have a look at some more complex rain Kanji
The next kanji that we are going to learn are combinations of 雨 to create other meanings and also some more stand alone kanji too.
霙
みぞれ
mizore
Sleet / Snow with Rain
霙 This is the kanji for sleet, which for those of you who don’t know, is snow mixed with rain. You can see the kanji at the top of this is a squished kanji for rain which will be a great way for you to remember it.
霧雨
きりさめ
kiri same
Misty Rain / Light Drizzle
This is the kanji for a light drizzle. The kanji before the rain kanji is the kanji for Fog which when you put these 2 meanings together, it really does make sense.
俄雨
にわかあめ
niwaka ame
Rain Shower / Sudden Shower
Niwakaamen means, sudden shower. We have first the kanji for “sudden” and then lastly the kanji for “rain”. It really is that simple with this one.
大雨
おおあめ
ooame
Heavy Rain
You will most likely recognise this kanji if you have been studying for a while. First we have the kanji for big and then the kanji for rain. When combined together this gives us the meaning of heavy rain.

Downpour
Here we have the kanji which represents “overpowering” with the onyomi reading of 雨 to give use the word GOUU, which means “downpour”.
暴風雨
ぼうふうう
boufuuu
Rainstorm
Combining three kanji meaning here, violence, wind and rain, to create rain storm. Those 3 kanji meaning really do sum up what it is like to be at the centre of a rain storm too.
雷雨
らいう
raiu
Thunderstorm
This is our last rain related kanji on the list which means “thunderstorm” . It combines the kanji for lighting with the kanji for rain.
We are now going to look at an effective study technique to help you remember these kanjis.
An amazing learning technique for remembering all of these new kanji
Now that we have learnt all of these new Kanji we are going to need to put into practice an effective way to be able to remember them for the long term. We are going to need to start by taking a pen and paper and writing out all of the kanji.
Step 1: Look at all of the different radicals inside of the kanji (These are the shapes that make up the big picture) and think of a really powerful / creative story to be able to remember their meaning.
Step 2: Add them to either physical flashcards or a digital anki system.
Step 3: Write sentences and actually use the Kanji within those sentences too.
If you do all of these steps for each of the 10 kanji that we have learnt today you are going to have mastered the use of these Kanji for the long term. Remember to keep reviewing them periodically too.
