The definition of んです and のです

A grasp on the fundamentals 

So firstly lets establish that のです is a more polite form of んです. Using these different endings adds a sense of indicating reason in a sentence. Let’s have a look at an example to see the difference between using んです and のです. 

Try and look closely here at the differences between these 2 sentences. 

• 辛いです。= karai desu.
• からいのです。= karai no desu.

While 1) is just a factual thing, It’s spicy.  2) sounds more explanatory indicating a reason for something, perhaps the reason why you don’t want to eat something or why many people don’t like it.

So now we know the basic definition. Let’s have a look at forming sentences with them.

Creating んです and のです sentences with verbs and adjectives. 

A closer look at the grammar

So let’s take a look at forming a sentence with のです and んです。

We can use this form after adjectives and also after plain form verbs. Let’s take a look at a verb example.

お腹がすいているのです。
ONAKA GA SUITEIRU NO DESU
(Because ) I’m hungry

Here you could be explaining a reason as to why you maybe are busy or can’t go out etc. 

All we did here is add のです to the end of a plain form verb. You can also do this in most tenses, past, continuous etc. 

When it comes to using the more casual counterpary んです all you have to do is swap のです for んです like so.

お腹がすいているんです。
ONAKA GA SUITEIRUN DESU
(Because ) I’m hungry

This is a more casual way to say the same thing. Let’s have a look now at some more adjective and verb examples using this. 

Let’s explore various example sentences with both のです and んです

Ensure you get confident and comfortable with the pattern.

In this first example the speaker is using an adjective followed by のです indicating that it is a little more formal.

あなたはやさしいのですね。
anata wa yasashii no desu ne.
You're a pretty nice person.

In this example they are being a little less form as they are using んです.

あなたがわるいんです。
anata ga warui no da.
You're the one to blame..

Here instead of です they are using だ to make it even more informal, 

きょうはすごくさむいんだね
Kyou wa sugoku samuin da ne 
Today it’s so cold ...
