On its own can mean simply “congratulations”
A more polite way to say this would be:
“おめでとうございます”

Here are a variety of sentences for you to have a look at using omedetou. Pay attenention to where おめでとう is placed within the sentence too.
In this first example we can see the speaker congratulating the listener on their victory. This would most likely be in the sports field. Make sure to take notes of these words too as they are really useful

Congratulations on the victory!
In this next example we can see the speaker is congratulating the listener on their success. This could be used more broadly too in a variety of situations. In most cases おめでとうございます is used right at the end of the sentence too.
成功、おめでとうございます。
Seikou omedetou gozaimasu
Let me congratulate you on your success.
This is a great phrase you could use if you are looking to congratulate someone that has passed an exam. So as you can see you can be quite specific in your congratulations too.
試験に合格、おめでとう。
Shiken ni goukaku omedetou
I congratulate you on passing the examination.
This may be the most common phrase of our examples and is used as a set phrase on birthdays. This is a great one to remember.

Tanjoubi Omedetou
Happy birthday to you!
Much like the previous example this one is short and sweet. 婚約 Konyaku is the Japanese word for engagement.
婚約おめでとう。

Let me congratulate you on your engagement.
What’s an engagement without a wedding? You must be getting sick of all this congratulating by now.
結婚おめでとう。
Kekkon omedetou
Let me congratulate you on your marriage
Here we have an example to be sued with thanksgiving.

Happy Thanks giving Day.
This is a classic example of another day where it could be used. Spooky!
