Sendai (仙台市): the capital of Miyagi

Sendai is the capital city of Miyagi prefecture and is technically known as the largest city in the Tohoku region. It roughly has around a million residents and is the best place to go to if you want to experience a little bit of everything Japan has to offer. It isn’t as popular as other places in Japan which is a good thing if you’d like to experience an authentic look at Japan. It has numerous attractions like museums, galleries, observation towers, castle ruins, and beautiful mausoleums of well known families in Japan.

It’s also quite known to locals due to its opulent fireworks in a festival called “Tanabata”. Since we are talking about Sendai’s notable attributes, let’s talk about the food found in Sendai. It’s mainly famous for its “牛タン(gyu tan)” or beef tongue that is usually grilled. They are also known for a type of fish sausage called sasakamaboko and also for their green soybean paste made of sticky rice balls called zunda mochi. They also have a wide range of vegetarian restaurants where there is always an abundance of fresh local produce. Don’t be fooled though, this place is quite “local” but it still has its fair share of night life. They have a pseudo red light district called Chuo-dori and Kokubuncho where the youth usually go for izakayas and bars.

They do not allow smoking on their campus and always has staff or teachers available for guidance or questions anytime. Sendai University is mainly a sports science university and is the only known sports comprehensive university in the region of Tohoku and Hokkaido. Their university has numerous facilities for their students like multiple gymnasiums, a university library, a club house, an indoor pool, soccer and rugby field, and even an international exchange hall. It does not only have numerous student facilities but also has very eager and patient teachers and staff, always ready to help their students with academics, life in Japan, and maybe even future employment.
