How to Use Koto in Japanese | Learn Japanese online

Verb + Koto –  こと

At first I often struggled with the use of Verb + Koto

For example :食べること, 歩くこと, 飲むこと

But now … It’s my best friend and I use it all the time.

ことKoto quite simply adds “ING” to the end of a verb.

To Eat becomes Eating

To Walk becomes Walking

To Drink becomes Drinking

こと (KOTOturns a verb into a noun.
It is an extremely useful thing to use when describing what actions you like or dislike doing.

I like “eating” udon

うどんを食べることが好きです。
うどんをたべることがすきです

UDON WO TABERU KOTO GA SUKI DESU

He likes “walking” in the Park

彼は公園を歩くことが好きです
かれはこうえんをあるくことがすきです

KARE WA KOUEN WO ARUKU KOTO GA SUKI DESU.

“Drinking” alcohol is dangerous

アルコールを飲むことは危険です
アルコールをのむことはきけんです。

ARUKO-RU WO NOMUKOTO WA KIKEN DESU

So there we go, get out there and start using KOTOこと with your verbs
